The Egyptian Chamber of Commerce in Alexandria, headed by Mr. Ahmed Al-Wakeel, held the first training of the “One Day Market for Farmers and Food Products” project, in the presence of an Italian delegation specialized in farmers’ markets, and a number of farmers, beekeepers and dairy producers.
The training aimed to explain the idea and purpose of the project, as the project targets small and micro enterprises, entrepreneurs, individuals from small farmers, producers of food commodities, apiary products, fishermen, traditional handicrafts and traditional fast food to participate in the Alexandria Farmers Market.
Successful experiences of farmers’ markets in Italy were also presented, the story of the establishment of these markets, the importance of direct selling, and a number of tips for the success of farmers’ markets.
The training included clarification of product pricing mechanisms, the importance of packaging, and food safety.
The project is in cooperation with the Governorate of Alexandria, the Ministries of Supply, Internal Trade, International Cooperation, Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Trade and Industry, and with the support of Italian Aid, the International Centre for Mediterranean Countries for the Study of Agriculture, the Italian Federation of Agriculture, the Italian Farmer Markets Organization, and the International Alliance of Farmers’ Markets.
It is funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, implemented by CIHEAM Bari in collaboration with the Global Farmer Market Alliance and promoted by COLDIRETTI through the Campagna Amica Foundation.
The program aims to provide technical support for the development of new farmer markets as effective tools to revitalize rural communities, improve the livelihoods of family farming and enhance the role of multifunctional agriculture in generating economic, social and environmental benefits.
Specifically, the project is committed to promoting the prosperity of communities and economies in the Mediterranean and African regions, such as Albania, Egypt, Lebanon, Kenya and Tunisia, with the main objective being to promote a sustainable food system by supporting efficiently managed farmer markets.
